Prominent Brisbane property developer Andrew Gray has bought a minority stake in the London Broncos, joining Queensland rugby league legend Darren Lockyer in a major push to return the undefeated UK club to the Super League.

Operating outside his luxury design and construction firm Graya, Mr Gray has made a personal investment in the English franchise, securing an option to increase his holding in the future.

The undisclosed investment builds on a decade-long friendship between the property boss and the Maroons great.

Lockyer and mining executive Grant Wechsel purchased a 90 per cent controlling stake in the club late last year, with English rugby league veteran Gary Hetherington holding the remaining 10 per cent.

Lockyer welcomed the strategic muscle Mr Gray brings to the London Broncos consortium.

“[Graya Co-director] Andrew [Gray] and Rob have had so much success in Australia, and their skill in marketing and attracting eyeballs and interest to their projects is certainly something that can help us with growing the London Broncos brand globally,” the Origin veteran said.

“I know Andrew is a very keen rugby league fan, so the passion is there as well.”

Club chairman Mr Wechsel said the expanded ownership group was looking to capitalise on a massive off-field rebuild.

“We originally spoke of a vision to create a tight-knit consortium of shareholders who could add value to the club,” Mr Wechsel said.

“His investment shows a strong belief in the vision we have for London.”

For Mr Gray, it is a chance to partner with a childhood hero.

“Growing up, I’ve always been a big fan of the Brisbane Broncos, watching Darren play,” he said.

“He has always been one of my favourite players, so being able to take on this journey with them is pretty exciting.”

The new-look ownership group is currently bankrolling a ruthless revenge tour in the UK’s second-tier Betfred Championship.

Despite controversially missing out on Super League promotion for the 2026 season due to the UK’s stringent IMG grading system, the Lockyer-led club sits at the top of the ladder after 11 consecutive wins.

Mr Gray said the roster’s quality was “probably too good” for the Championship, but acknowledged the unique UK system which grades clubs across fandom, performance, finances, stadium, and community required heavy lifting off the field.

“It’s a bit different the way promotion works over there; you also need your metrics and financials up to scratch,” he said.

“First, we have to do what we can to win on the field, and then behind the scenes, we have been working hard to get the required metrics where they need to be.”

The consortium has set a hard target for top-flight promotion in 2027. But ruling out a quick flip, Mr Gray stressed the Aussie ownership group was playing a long game.

“There are no plans to build it up and sell out; this is a long-term play,” Mr Gray said.

“The first goal is to move up into the Super League. Once we tick that off, we want the London Broncos to be a recognised brand in rugby league throughout the world.

“We want this to be a highly successful venture over the next 10 to 20 years.”
