Social Security payments in September follow a normal schedule, with most payments starting Sept. 9.
Social Security benefits, paid mostly to older or retired recipients, typically go out on Wednesdays. If your birthday falls between the first and 10th days of the month, your payment is scheduled for the second Wednesday, Sept. 9, according to the Social Security Administration’s calendar.
If you were born between the 11th and 20th, you get paid on the third Wednesday, Sept. 16. Those born after the 20th are paid on the fourth Wednesday, Sept. 23. Social Security recipients who began getting benefits before May 1997 are scheduled to be paid Sept. 3, according to the SSA calendar.
Social Security Payment Schedule for September 2026
The Social Security Administration’s payment calendars for 2026 and 2027 are available online. You can use the schedule to plan your budget.
The check you get in September is technically your Social Security retirement benefit for August. Your September benefit is covered by the check that arrives in October, according to the SSA.
- Wednesday, Sept. 9: Birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- Wednesday, Sept. 16: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- Wednesday, Sept. 23: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.
SSI Payment Schedule for September and the Rest of 2026
Supplemental Security Income, a program also administered by the SSA, provides benefits for people with limited or no income or resources, those 65 or older, and people who are blind or have a qualifying disability, including children with a qualifying disability, according to the SSA website.
SSI recipients are typically issued payments on the first business day of the month. In September, that is Tuesday, Sept. 1. Occasionally, recipients may get two checks in one month because the first business day of the following month falls on a weekend or holiday.
Here are the SSI payment dates for the rest of 2026, according to the SSA calendar:
- Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026
- Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026
- Friday, Oct. 30, 2026
- Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2026
- Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026
