From earthy retreats and gothic castles to contemporary beauties, the most-viewed property listings on realestate.com.au during April were homes that aim to make a statement.

These headturners were spread across almost every state and territory, with six in Victoria, five in Queensland, three in Western Australia and New South Wales, two in South Australia and one in Tasmania.

While many came with plenty of land, the vast majority were in or around our capital cities. Not a single apartment made the list this month.

Take a look at some of the unique homes dominating clicks this month.

Coastal stunner used for photo shoots

This contemporary four-bedroom home was the most-clicked on property in April. It’s an enticing blend of mid-century modern and coastal chic — whose designers clearly have an aversion to blank, white canvases.

There are walnut veneer walls and ceilings, black Japanese tiled bathrooms, cork floors and a black Verde Alpi marble kitchen at Moreton Bay’s 12 Greenup Street, Redcliffe.

Designed by architect Nicholas Elias and completed in 2024, ‘Lantern’ also boasts a circular pivot door, sculptural staircase and concrete circular pool, earning it a finalist spot in HIA’s House of the Year awards.

Agent Tristan Rowland at Bright Estate Agents said the home, listed for $2.9m, has been popular among Brisbane, interstate and overseas buyers eyeing it as a luxe home, high-end Airbnb or photo-shoot cash cow.

“The current owners are getting $2,500 a day for photo shoots — better yields than most rentals and no tenants needed,” he said. “It’s like an Airbnb on steroids.”

Record-holding waterfront mansion

Unmissable from the Swan River, this palatial waterfront mansion at 43 Saunders Street, Mosman Park stunned WA — and Australia — by fetching a record $57.5m in 2009 when it sold to mining billionaire Chris Ellison and wife Tia.

This iconic home on 7,565sqm remains WA’s priciest home sale to date, and it could shatter records again given Perth’s prestige property market boom.

Hidden down a tree-lined drive, the three-storey showpiece reveals an indoor pool pavilion (with spa and splash pool), tennis court, guest house, gate house and boathouse with a private jetty.

Entrancing features include a three-storey glass-domed foyer with hand-painted acanthus leaves, a sweeping marble and wrought-iron staircase, graceful living spaces, a private cinema, a gently trickling koi pond, and a vast lawn with pavilions and sauna.

Agent Vivien Yap at Ray White Dalkeith Claremont described the home as a “showstopper”.

Barbiecore dreamland in inner Melbourne

“Unapologetically pink” is the heading on the listing for 23 St Georges Road South, Fitzroy North — a Barbiecore fantasy that’s been designed with love and lived in with pride.

This two-bedroom, one-bathroom terrace dazzles in pastel pink outside, then unleashes pink ceilings, blissful blue walls, a pastel-tiled kitchen, bold wallpaper, statement light fittings, a terrazzo bathroom and red-pink laundry — all flowing to a rear courtyard.

But despite attracting lots of interest, the home passed in at auction.

“Feedback says it’s just a very personal renovation — and it’s tricky at a time when renovation costs are on the higher side,” agent James McCulloch at Nelson Alexander Fitzroy explained.

The property listing notched up almost 20,000 views on realestate.com.au in April. Picture: realestate.com.au

But for the right person, it’s perfection, he added.

“With these personal homes, you’ve got to find someone who is absolutely obsessed.”

Off-grid retreat calls for cash buyer

Rising power bills and slicker tech have made living off grid increasingly popular, with buyers swarming to this self-sufficient home at 364 South Arm Road, Urunga, 30 minutes south of Coffs Harbour.

And who could blame them. This private rural retreat on 23 hectares boasts Pacific ocean views, a three-bedroom mud brick and stone home, two two-bedroom cottages, a one-bedroom cabin, storage shed, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, rainwater tanks, solar with battery storage plus gas hot water — all for just $825,000.

Agent Warren Weick at Warren Weick Real Estate Bellingen said he’s been “hammered” with more than 300 enquiries in two weeks.

But there are two catches: a steep 4WD-only driveway and unapproved buildings that prevent bank loans.

“That means you’ve got to be a cash buyer,” Mr Weick said.

Storied Eltham mudbrick home

Another rustic beauty, this four-bedroom home in Melbourne’s outer north east feels like someone realised their own romantic dream.

And that’s pretty much what happened. Back in 1959, artists Kevin and June Engish bought some land and built a mudbrick home by hand, which took them 16 years.

With June passing away last year, her daughter Penny is reluctantly selling the family home at 9 Godalmin Street, Eltham for the very first time.

Earthy and eccentric, it blends salvaged bluestone from old Melbourne buildings and old theatre doors. There’s a stained-glass Adam-and-Eve front door, sculptural stone stairs, soaring ceilings, celestial windows, a vast stone fireplace, slate floors and hidden courtyards.

Agent James Morrison at Morrison Kleeman Estate Agents said the home has grown over time.

“As the family’s life evolved, more creative spaces and more areas were added.”

Around 250 groups viewed the property, sparking multiple offers before it sold for $1.83m.

‘Earth castle’ with living grass roof

Tani and Tim Richards, designers of Perth’s iconic Sandcastle, have been creating another gothic-inspired fantasy over the last five years, and now it’s on the market.

Instead of being perched on a clifftop, ‘The Earth Castle’ at 93 Wilson Road, Bullsbrook is carved into the ground — with a “living” grass roof.

Set on a 25-hectare estate around an hour northeast of Perth, this sprawling private sanctuary curves around a lake and is a triumph of thermal design and artistic vision. It features arched timber doors, a spiral stone staircase, cascading waterfall, secret wine cellar room, and a working drawbridge to the garage.

With six grand bedrooms, many with ensuites and lake views, agent Simon Bird at Sherlock Homes Group said this versatile property would suit a wide range of buyers.

“We’ve had a call from monastery owners, a hotel chain, a hospitality group and families looking for a multigenerational home,” he said. “There’s no real stereotypical buyer for this one.”

There’s no real guide price as yet either, with Tani and Tim waiting to see how the market reacts as they plot their next castle.
