Why can’t you just tell us what you are actually selling? – Investment Moats

I used to have to understand more financial products and services in the past as a financial writer/blogger.

Before you can write a sponsorship post, you need to understand the philosophy, what the firm that is pitching is trying to do.

We also need to know what they are trying to sell, or how do they make money. Where is their economic bias.

At some point, it seems that all the school about marketing and branding tells a lot of the firm out there that you need to frame what is your company about, and why you are doing what you do.

That is fine, but for some, they spend soooooooooooo much of their content writing about it and soooooooooo little of their time disclosing the product and service that that they are selling or providing.

If I eventually figured out what they are providing or selling, there can be too feeling:

  1. Now I know why they are not writing or providing so much because they are less than confident about the product and service. It’s usually pretty nascent.
  2. They probably don’t want you to know about what they provide.

The second one is very prevalent and its linked to those posts you would see in your Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn sharing about how they have help their clients, how these people are not in a good state and how they can greatly improve their situation if they do X or Y or Z.

But they don’t tell you much about the product.

I think it usually comes down to confidence or that if you know too much about their products you would have a different opinion. And they want to shape your opinion through the sales process.

This is why you can see a lot of posts from financial planners but they will never tell you what they recommend to their clients. I wonder why someone cannot just say I have these assortment of funds that are available and that I work with clients using these set of Investment Linked Policies.

Why can’t you just tell us in social media how good is this AIA Pro Achiever 3.0?

Is it so hard to tell us about your Long Term Portfolio you recommend to clients? What about something on this China Taiping Infinite Indexed Legacy plan?

Is it a compliance issue to say that we can recommended these 3 or 4 different personal accident products and what they are?

I just don’t see any of these things happening.

When there are less information about the features, in this time and age, you close off any potential sales to people who are genuinely interested to explore more.

That’s what it does to me.

I always wonder why can’t someone who helps people do some will just go on and talk about roughly what can be done. I might be more willing to do a will if I realize that I am quite ready for it.

That’s the problem that I find with content.

Too much high level feel-good, feel-bad stuff and what ends up sometimes is I don’t even know what is the ACTUAL Product.

The content and marketing space have changed since we have the internet, but then it feels nothing much has changed as well for some. They still prefer to gate-keep products from people.

And I wonder if that is helpful for their business.
