Hyundai is voluntarily recalling more than 94,000 Genesis and GV80 vehicles due to a possible fuel leak that could increase the risk of an engine fire.
According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai Motor America found that the “crossover fuel pipe connecting the left and right fuel rails of the engines in the subject vehicles may have been installed with retention fasteners that may gradually loosen over time.”
The issue was first reported by two U.S. customers in July 2024, who said they noticed a fuel-like odor and visible leakage, NHTSA said.
The recall notice says the “retention fasteners were tightened with insufficient concentrations of torque stabilizer at the fuel rail connections during vehicle assembly, causing the retention (axial) force to diminish over time,” and increasing the risk of a leak.
Hyundai has received 129 reports “alleging the subject condition in the U.S. market.” The earliest report dates back to Oct. 29, 2021. U.S. customers haven’t reported any crashes, fires or injuries related to the defect.
Authorized dealers and affected customers will be notified of the safety recall on June 8.
