Country Victorian Navy veteran Gail has won Australia’s biggest-ever prize-home giveaway, a $15.5m windfall that could bring her FIFO husband home and help her children into the property market.
A country Victorian navy veteran’s $15.5m property windfall will bring her FIFO husband home after up to seven years working away and help her two children into the housing market.
Just a day before learning she had won four luxury apartments on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Gail had called her bank manager and decided her children would need to wait longer and save more before buying homes.

Her daughter, a theatre nurse, and son, who works at a primary school, had been trying to get into the market.
“I just rung the manager up and said, ‘Look, we’re just going to wait a little bit longer. They’re going to save a bit more money’,” Gail said.
“So now I’ve just said to them, ‘This will be possible’.”
Her children initially told their parents to enjoy the prize themselves, but Gail said the windfall would change the whole family’s future.
“They’ve still got to work hard,” she said.
“That’s our biggest thing, you work hard and you get your rewards.”
After six or seven years of fly-in, fly-out work, Gail said the $15.5m win meant her husband could finally come home and leave the pressure of working away behind.
Just a day before Gail discovered she had won, the family had been discussing how her children would need to keep saving before entering the property market. Now, she says, “this will be possible”.
The win will also allow her husband, who has worked fly-in, fly-out for six or seven years, to return home.
“My daughter says we’re not mentally prepared for him, but that’s okay,” Gail said.
“He’s been my rock and I think just that pressure has been so lifted.”
The family also plans to clear its mortgage.
The penthouse rooftop was the standout for Gail, who said living beside the sand and ocean had always been a dream she never expected would become possible.
The four luxury apartments come fully furnished, with more than $525,000 worth of furniture and electricals included in the record-breaking prize.
But Gail has no plans to leave the quiet country Victorian home she loves, about 20 minutes from Geelong.
“We still want a really simple life,” she said.
“Everyone’s asked us if we’re going to move from our house. No, because we love where we are.”
The Kings Beach complex has four luxury apartments, including a penthouse with a private rooftop terrace. The real estate is valued at $14.6m and has an estimated combined long-term rental return of $265,200 a year.
“The lift for a start, we own a lift. Oh my God. That’s crazy,” Gail said.
“My dream has always been wanting to be on the sand and the ocean.
“Something that was never going to be part of my dream ever now has become.”
Despite the riches, her plans remain modest.
Gail’s extraordinary prize includes an entire four-apartment complex at Kings Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with the real estate alone valued at $14.6m.
Despite suddenly controlling a multimillion-dollar property portfolio, Gail said her family’s priority was simple: spend more time together and create memories they never thought possible.
Gail makes felt animals and other craft pieces using Australian wool and hopes her husband will build her a studio where she can run workshops.
“I just want to share my joy with everybody else,” she said.
The win has extra meaning for Gail, who served in the navy and had bought Dream Home Art Union tickets for more than 20 years partly to support other veterans.
“They do a great job, veterans, for our country and a lot of people do forget them,” she said.
The Kings Beach properties have an estimated combined long-term rental return of $265,200 a year, giving Gail the option to live in, rent or sell apartments within the complex.
Gail said sharing the extraordinary win with her close-knit family mattered more than changing the simple country Victorian life they already loved.
Dream Home Art Union general manager lotteries Ben Sawkins said the $15.5m package was the biggest prize-home giveaway in Australian history.
It includes the apartments, $250,000 in gold, about $525,000 in furniture and electricals, a travel voucher and the first year of rates, water and body corporate costs.
Mr Sawkins said the $265,200 rental estimate was based on long-term leasing.
“She could rent one, she can live in one. She could sell one,” Mr Sawkins said.
“This is generational wealth now for her and her family.”
Mr Sawkins said proceeds from Dream Home Art Union tickets supported RSL Queensland programs for veterans and their families, including advocacy, employment, wellbeing and housing services.
Figures supplied by the organisation show 7563 veterans and their families received health and wellbeing support in 2025, 267 jobs were secured and 227 veterans and families were helped into safe, permanent accommodation.
