BrightMLS is the latest to partner with Compass and expand nationwide. Here’s what the growing alliance means for listings, portals and you.

In just a matter of weeks, Compass has locked in partnerships with MRED, Realtracs, TheMLS/CLAW and now BrightMLS — four of the largest MLSs in the country, covering the Mid-Atlantic, the South, Chicagoland and greater LA. HiveMLS (serving Georgia, the Carolinas and beyond) is apparently next in line.

“Compass has committed to making its nationwide data available to our subscribers through our system,” BrightMLS CEO Brian Donnellan wrote when announcing the deal. “In addition, Compass has agreed to subsidize new Bright subscriptions for its agents under Compass International Holdings in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, or elsewhere in the country so they can take advantage of Bright’s capabilities across regions.”

Meanwhile, the portal wars’ new front intensified this week when Zillow sued Compass and MRED in federal court over what it called a conspiracy to threaten Zillow’s access to listings if it enforced its policy around pre-marketed listings.
