Hollywood powerhouse Russell Crowe has given insight into one of his earliest property purchases on Joe Rogan’s podcast, thanking his younger self for buying a slice of Aussie bushland that would become his haven.

In the November 6 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Crowe and Rogan discuss Crowe’s Aussie “home”, a rural property in Nana Glen on the NSW North Coast.

“I always look back at my 30-year-old self who made the decision to take the little bit of money that I’d earned at that point, 31, 32 I was, and buy 100 acres in the bush, because somehow I knew I would need that place,” Crowe said.

“I could have bought an apartment in the city, but I didn’t.

“I bought 100 acres of basically blank bush, no fences.”

Crowe said he bought the block on January 20, 1996, before he began shooting LA Confidential.

“I look at that 32-year-old and go, ‘mate, well done’,” he said.

The Academy Award winner said the property was his island, a place he could escape to when he needed to recharge.

“I call the place I have in the bush, it’s not its official name, but I call it the panacea,” he said.

“It will fix all ill, but you have to give over to its rhythm.

“You have to wake before the birds.

“You have to sort of put yourself in a situation where you’re going deep into the bush, so you’re getting that kind of oxygen.

“You just have to really give yourself over to it.

“Spend your days just checking if the cows are okay, having a look if the new trough system is working, or just getting your hands a little bit dirty and forgetting all the other stuff.”

Crowe said once he went through the front gates of the property he could shed the ‘Russell Crowe’ title.

“This brand name, this sort of stamp, and that’s all you hear, you know? Russell Crowe, Russell Crowe,” he said.

“And then I go beyond that gate, and I’m no longer that.

“I’m a son, I’m a brother, I’m an uncle, I’m a dad.

“I’m the boss of the operation of the farms.

“All of those things come into play, and the whole brand thing drops away, and you’ve got to prove yourself on a way different level when you’re at home.”

News Corp previously reported Crowe scooped up hectares of surrounding land since purchasing that first 100-acre block in Nana Glen.

In 2013 it was reported the actor and film director bought a further nine surrounding lots around the original parcel of land, with the total holding spanning hundreds of hectares.

Crowe also owns a 1000 sqm Finger Wharf penthouse in Woolloomooloo, which he bought for $14.35m in 2003.

In November 2024 it was reported the Gladiator star was willing to sell the property for the right price.

That price was believed to be about $42m-$45m at the time.
